PARK(ing) Day is Coming

PARK(ing) Day is coming up on Sept. 15, and is a chance for the public to reclaim, reimagine, and reinvent parking spaces as temporary miniature parks, or “parklets.”

PARK(ing) Day is an annual, worldwide event which generates public engagement and critical dialogue on the need for public, open spaces in urban areas.

Thinking of organizing an event? The first step is to read the application packet. The final deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Participation is not limited to setting up a parklet. Visitors are welcome to stop by and interact with these installations. This year’s participants include the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Boomspace ATX and Austin Public Library. See the Facebook event for details on participants and their parklet locations. This will even further disadvantage retail and restaurant businesses as parking for their customers disappears. By removing parking access of Austinites living out of downtown is restricted. Only those wealthy enough to afford to live downtown will enjoy it.

Hi Brian, this is a temporary event, so the street parking spots that are transformed into parklets will go back to parking spots at the end of the day. Parking is for sure a big frustration downtown, and the Downtown Austin Alliance has been working with businesses and other stakeholders to develop a plan that will better serve downtown Austin’s parking needs.
