New Cap Metro Ride Hailing Service Rolls Into Austin

Northeast Austin residents and employees can now use Pickup, a new ride hailing service from Capital Metro.

Pickup is an app that lets you arrange on-demand transit service. It’s replaced Capital Metro’s MetroFlex Upper Eastside pilot route and is serving the same area of Northeast Austin: from the intersection of Manor Rd. and Airport Blvd. to the I-35 access road north of Rutherford. It includes the Mueller Development, Capital Plaza, Coronado Hills and Cameron Road near Dobie Middle School.

Pickup is currently a free service. It operates three days a week: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Capital Metro has said that the pilot, which began in June, will run for nine months to a year. After that, the agency will review feedback and lessons leaned and the board will decide on next steps. So far, the service has been outperforming its predecessor, MetroFlex, by quite a bit, Capital Metro says. Pickups have been spread around the service area, but the most popular destinations are HEB, Walmart, and Target.

The Pickup app was developed in partnership with Via, which operates on-demand ridesharing platforms in New York City, Chicago and Washington, D.C., and licenses its technology to transportation providers globally.

“Capital Metro is thrilled to be able to work with Via and take part in an innovative pilot project like this,” said Capital Metro President/CEO Linda Watson. “It’s an exciting time to be in transportation, when so many new options are right around the corner. We’re committed to taking advantage of every opportunity we can to improve the way we move people around Central Texas.”

To get started using Pickup, download the app from your phone’s app store register for an account and you’ll be ready to go! Your trip will then be matched with other travelers heading to the same destination, and the Pickup vehicle will arrive within 15 minutes.

Those without access to the smartphone app can call 512-369-6200.
