Summertime, and the Commuting is Easy

Have you ever noticed that the traffic flow is a little better during the summer? That’s because even small shifts in the number of people driving alone during rush hour can make big traffic impacts. Maybe more people are on vacation, teleworking, or using flex hours – either way, fewer of them are on the road in the summer.

Instead of looking forward to time in your car this summer, why not try out your own mobility experiment? Without the confines of school schedules, it’s a perfect time for some commuters to experiment with options. And who knows, some of those experiments may turn into new habits.

There are a few developments on the horizon that may help: in August Capital Metro will be boosting the frequency of its two MetroRapid routes.

Both Routes 801 and 803 will add frequency between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays so that the service will run every 10 minutes. On weekends, both routes will run every 15 minutes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Late-night service will operate at 20-minute frequencies until 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, both routes will operate at 20-minute frequencies until midnight.

Once the MoPac Improvement Project wraps up later this summer, those extra lanes will also provide a congestion-free corridor for Express Bus routes to use. That could make the Express Bus a great option for commuters coming into Austin from more outlying areas. Imagine zipping down MoPac past all the cars sitting still!
