SXSW is Almost Here – How Are You Avoiding Traffic?

Love it or hate it, SXSW brings some big changes to Austin each March. One of the biggest is traffic; between street closures and a temporary swell in population, Austin’s congestion gets undeniably worse. Luckily for you, there are a lot of alternatives that will help you get around during SXSW! Here’s a guide to the mobility options on hand for that week:

Capital Metro

You can expect regular and expanded service on Capital Metro’s MetroRapid buses, MetroRail, Late-Night buses, and MetroAirport buses.

  • MetroRapid will operate until 2:30 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays during SXSW. Hours will also be expanded on Sundays, with service running until 12:30 a.m. All other days, MetroRapid will operate on its regular schedule, until midnight Monday through Thursday. A single ride on MetroRapid costs $1.25.
  • MetroRail Extended service will be extended daily, with Saturday and Sunday service both starting earlier and ending later. On Saturday, service runs from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 a.m., and on Sunday the first train leaves at 10:30 a.m. with service extended until midnight. Capital Metro will provide overflow buses for when the train is too crowded beginning Friday, March 10 through Saturday, March 18. They will operate from 9 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. A single ride on MetroRail costs $3.50.
  • Night Owl buses will operate until after 3 a.m. at double their normal service capacity every day except Sunday.
  • MetroAirport Route 100 offers service to and from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) and downtown every 30 minutes for $1.25. On Sunday, March 19, MetroAirport will run every 15 minutes throughout the day.
