Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 3 and plan to start the holidays off right in downtown Austin at the annual Holiday Sing-Along and Downtown Stroll! All events are free and open to the public. The evening starts at 6:00 p.m. when crowds gather on the south steps of the Capitol to sing the songs of the season during KUTX 98.9 “Eklektikos” host John Aielli’s Holiday Sing-Along.
As the clock strikes 7 p.m., the countdown to the lighting of the Capitol tree begins, featuring a programmed light show at the top and bottom of every hour, set to holiday songs of local Austin musicians.
From 7 to 9 p.m. Congress Avenue will be abuzz with holiday cheer during the Downtown Stroll. Join us to hear live music and enjoy fun family-friendly activities! Shops, restaurants, galleries, and museums will also be open late and will feature special activities and offers.
If you can, please support fellow members of the community by bringing non-perishable food to the Capitol Christmas tree for the Central Texas Food Bank.
There’s also a lot of fun planned in Zilker Park: the Zilker Tree Lighting is on Nov. 27, the Trail of Lights Fun Run on Dec. 3, and on Dec. 10, the 52nd Trail of Lights will have its Grand Opening.
Of course, you won’t be the only one who wants to experience all these fun events, so to get there without traffic headaches and hassles, plan to use options: Capital Metro’s #3, #4, #30, and #338 will all get you close to Zilker Park for the Trail of Lights and Zilker tree lighting. Shuttles will also run from the Burger Center and from Republic Square Park, which is also close to several transit stops. To get to the Stroll and Sing Along, take advantage of the many transit routes that go downtown, including MetroRapid and MetroRail. Or, bring your bike and pedal in.
