School’s out, and there’s a lot of great stuff going on in Austin over the summer. Here are some of our top picks, and the best stress-free ways to get to them!
Take a dive: there’s nothing like a swimming pool to help fend off the Texas summer heat. Grab a B-Cycle to get to two central spring-fed pools, Barton Springs and Deep Eddy.
Catch a movie: The Paramount Theater is famous for its summer classic film series. Since it’s smack in the middle of Congress Avenue, you have lots of options for getting there! Ride your bike (bonus points if you do so while singing and wearing re-purposed drapes) to see the Sound of Music Sing-Along, or take MetroRail to see Strangers on a Train.
Grab a Milkshake: Who doesn’t scream for ice cream in the summer? There are some great burger and shake joints around Austin – some of our favorites include Hut’s (take the MetroBus 4 route or either MetroRapid route to get there), Sandy’s (take the 801 MetroRapid), and Hat Creek (take the 803 MetroRapid).
Get Lost in a Book: Join Smart Trips’ Austin Public Library Bike Crawl on June 4, and you’ll ride to the Yarborough branch, Recycled Reads bookstore, and North Village branch. Breakfast tacos will be provided at the starting point (Old Quarry) and snacks and water will be available at all stops. At the final stop, there will be a party with bike organizations tabling, live music from Mariachi Amor, and crafts.
Have Fun with Food Trailers: Food Trailer Tuesdays are returning to the Long Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Long Center’s All Summer Long series on the city terrace June 7, July 19, and August 16. There’s a B-Cycle station right in front of the Long Center, or you can take the 801 MetroRapid to get there.
