Commuting – Maybe it Should be “Fun and Games”

Most Austinites are frustrated with traffic, and most people enjoy playing games. So Movability Austin has combined the two in what we call a Commute Smackdown. Change and trying new things is always hard…but an office competition that pits coworkers against one another for gold stars and prizes becomes a quest to try new options and Smackdown your office buddies.

Studio 8 Architects just celebrated the success of its Smackdown game. More than two thirds of Studio 8’s Austin staff participated, and collectively got over 7,000 points – earning them a special happy hour on West Sixth Street. They took 377 actions – everything from tuning up bikes, walking to lunch, trying the bus for the first time, flexing schedules, and giving up parking, too!

The most common feedback from the game? The competition – and the prizes – are what made the experience fun and interesting.

Julie told us, “This is just the push I needed to finally look up the bus route near my house. Once I tried it, it was much easier than I expected.”

Jonathan and Taylor went from being just coworkers to committed carpool partners. Jonathan says, “Now, when my kids are being difficult in the morning, I just have to ask: ‘Do you want to see Uncle Taylor?’ and they get right in the car.”

At the celebratory happy hour, Studio 8 principal Milton Hime told the staff, “I challenged you all to the Commute Smackdown – and you proved to me that you could do it. I was a skeptic, but you’ve embraced the bus, bike, carpooling. Studio 8 is all in for commute options.”

What’s next? Studio 8 and Movability are working together to extend Smackdown benefits like free transit passes and preferred carpool parking – and most importantly, to keep the fun alive.Screen shot 2016-03-16 at 2.38.19 PM Screen shot 2016-03-16 at 2.38.03 PM Screen shot 2016-03-16 at 2.37.56 PM Screen shot 2016-03-16 at 2.37.44 PM Screen shot 2016-03-16 at 2.37.34 PM Screen shot 2016-03-16 at 2.37.28 PM
