As a commuter using options to come downtown, you may have noticed something strange happening in your driveway at home: Your car is sitting there. Unused. All day! Or maybe you’re driving the carpool into work – then letting that car languish in a downtown parking garage for 8 hours.
Is it time for your car to earn its keep?
Getaround enables you to rent your personal vehicle whenever you don’t need it, by the hour or by the day. They cover the insurance, screen the renters, and facilitate payment and exchange. You can list your car right from your driveway at home – no need to take it to a central pickup location. We announced the Getaround app last year, and it is now launching in Austin during SXSW.
Getaround is what’s called a peer-to-peer (P2P) carsharing network. There are a couple of others in Austin, too. RelayRides is very similar to Getaround, offers optional car delivery, and has a broad network of participating cities across the country. FlightCar is an airport-specific P2P carsharing network. When you travel, you can leave your car in their airport parking lot for free. They’ll try to rent the car out while you’re gone, and maybe you’ll have some spending money for your next trip.
The Airbnb of transportation is here – so join the Austin network and start sharing!
