It should go without saying that using a phone (as well as shaving or applying makeup) while driving isn’t the safest idea. People do all those things anyway, but as of next year it will be illegal to use hand held devices while driving.
At the end of August, the Austin City Council passed a distracted driving ordinance, which bans the use cellphones and other electronic devices while driving a vehicle or riding a bicycle. The new ordinance will go into effect January 1, 2015. There is already an ordinance in place that bans texting while driving, but the new ordinance will also ban taking calls, playing online games, and browsing the Internet while driving or cycling.
In the meantime, if you just can’t bear to part with your electronic device, there is good news: if you’re a passenger in a carpool, on the bus, or on the train, you can text and Candy Crush to your heart’s content.
