For years, Austin runners, bikers, and pedestrians have had to negotiate a 1.1-mile gap in the trail at Lady Bird Lake. Now, after 20 months of construction, that gap is gone and a gorgeous new boardwalk trail is in place.
The boardwalk extends partially over the lake, and gives continuous pedestrian and bike access along the south shore of the lake. Completing the section of trail and providing a safe crossing of I-35 means people commuting and visiting the downtown area have a great new route to get them where they need to go, without relying on cars. It also reconnects communities on the city’s eastside to the downtown area as well as to the westside.
Features of the new boardwalk include overlooks that extend over the lake, bike racks and locks, shaded rest areas, and lights for nighttime use.
If you’re eager to get a look at the new Boardwalk trail, a grand opening is scheduled for June 7 at 10am, at the Lakeshore Trailhead. The event will include music by the SoundWaves, a march across the Boardwalk led by the Eastside Panther Drumline, and an aerial dance performance under I-35 by Blue Lapis Light.
