Health Bit: Walking Is What All the Cool Kids Are Doing

Walking is enjoying a bit of a moment. It seems you can’t check out a newspaper nowadays without reading of a new study extolling the benefits of walking.

Screen shot 2014-06-16 at 11.40.39 AMOne of the latest studies recently got some press from the New York Times: walking “significantly reduces the chance that a frail older person will become physically disabled, according to one of the largest and longest-running studies of its kind to date.”

Of course, there’s no reason to wait until old age to start making walking a habit. Research, and there’s lots of it, shows that walking helps us lose weight, stave off diseases like diabetes, and improve heart health. An easy way to incorporate 20 or 30 minutes of walking into your day is to reconsider your commute; walk to work if you can, or use transit and walk to work from the bus or train stop.
