Summer Fun: Five Car-Free Family Friendly Activities

Don’t waste your summer sitting in bumper to bumper in traffic. Treat your time here as if you were on vacation in some exotic city. Instead of the usual (spending your days behind the wheel) act like you are in Europe or Asia by going car-lite this summer. Opt for adventurous bike rides or walks to nearby events and activities. If you do have to drive, make it social – the more the merrier when using carshare or car/van-pooling. Whenever possible let someone else do the driving by hopping on the bus or RedLine with CapMetro. It’s fun to travel in groups when using the bus, walking or bicycling; you can grab a coffee, pop in somewhere for a bite to eat, or check out a movie if you feel like it. The summer is a great time to take a car-free stay-cation and feel like you’re on an international getaway with friends and family!

Here are our picks for car-free summer fun:

  1. Take a dip – Walk or cycle to your neighborhood pool to beat the heat!
  2. Watch a flick – Travel by foot, bike, transit, car share (check out car2go’s summer dropzones!) or carpool to one of the many pop-up cinema screenings around town this summer: Movies in The Park at Republic Square Park, Cinema East at French Legation, Splash Movies at Deep Eddy Pool or Sound & Cinema at The Long Center.
  3. Enjoy the market – Bike, walk or ride the bus or RedLine to a Farmers Market near you. If you’re near downtown, head to SFC Downtown Market at Republic Square on Saturday morning or the Hope Market at Saltillo Plaza (a RedLine stop!) on Sunday.
  4. Learn something new – Walk, bike or bus to Austin Children’s Museum, check out the many programs the library system as to offer, stroll around Bob Bullock Museum and relax at the IMAX Theatre or join a free, guided Historic Walking Tour.
  5. Choose your own adventure – Create a fun bike adventure to embark on with your family and friends. Use the Austin bike map to plan a comfortable route and invite your friends using with these printable invites we found on Design*Sponge…and then tell us all about it!

It’s always best to plan your route before you head out. We recommend using CapMetro Trip Planner, Dadnab, RideScout, RideTheCity or Google Maps. Then, once you get comfortable exercising your muscle for alt-transit know-how, go ahead and incorporate your new tricks into your daily commute!

What other car-free activities make your summer extra special? We’d love to hear your ideas and adventures!
