Safe Routes to School

Walking or biking to school is the healthiest way for children to discover an active lifestyle and build a sense of community from an early age. Accompanying your child for their morning commute also offers a great opportunity to spend time together to talk and teach them about traffic safety. There is a program that helps make this a safer experience for everyone by paying for improvements that create safe routes to schools. Oddly it’s called the Safe Routes to School Program (SRTS) and community leaders, local government, and parents work with schools to identify the challenges students face in their neighborhoods then make the improvements that gives children safer ways to walk and bike to school. Essentially, SRTS means a healthier Austin for all of us, reducing traffic around schools, less environmental damage from car emissions and better fitness.
